rain and now fog is forming. sharon is investigating an accident, marty is over at first warning weather. >> this rain that's been with us all night long is getting ready the finally pull out of the area. give it until 7:00, 7:30. gray skies but mild through the day. 37 degrees 13 warmer than this time yesterday on tv hill. by lunch 57 going to a high of 60. where's that accident? here is sharon gibala at wjz traffic control. >> good morning. we had two accidents, one of them on 95, that one is gone. we still have that one on the topside of the beltway at lock raven. average speeds 54 and 52. that is mostly because of weather not because of the volume of cars out there. 95 still running at full speed between white marsh and the tunnel. there's a live look at 95 just south of white marsh where you're seeing rain drops and some of that fog. there's a live look at 83 at

shawan road running smoothly. now wjz has the stories that people are talking about this morning. 14 people are dead, more than 200,000 homes remain without power after a winter storm dumps record breaking amounts of snow in the northeast. this morning marly hall has the latest for for wjz. >> nearly half the roads in hamden connecticut are still impassable. thomas ross is clearing more than 3 feet of snow from around his home. >> there's a lot of roads that haven't been touched yet. people can't get out. >> some residents believe the town should have been more prepared. >> there's a time where as prepared as you are mother nature deals you a card that you cannot manage. >> in new britain trucks are collecting snow and dumping it in a field. workers have been at this since about 10:00 this morning. they say they won't be

finished until the early morning hours. >> i dump a load every 5 to 10 minutes. there's quite a bit of snow. >> along the massachusetts coast where the snow and storm surges were a lethal combination residents are returning to check the damage. don and joan morrison found their home in ice. >> if you want to have this view and be on the ocean like this you have to put up with nature. nature rules. >> despite the risks, the morrisons have no plan to give up their ocean front home. marly hall, wjz eyewitness news. >> transportation officials in the northeast say most mass transit systems are expected to be up and running for this morning's commute. in the south a tornado rips through mississippi hitting the university of southern

mississippi campus. they ask all students not on the campus to stay away from the university. the twister was par -- part of a string of severe storms. more than a dozen people are hurt because of it. back here in anne arundel county three people are recovering after an airport shuttle bus crashes into a pole. it happened yesterday near the airport. investigators say the bus took the corner too sharply and ran into a pole, one that supports the power lines for the right rail system. two people were taken to the hospital. a third person refused medical treatment. speaking of the airport there could be another way to pass the time while waiting for a flight. wjz and mike schuh is live with what a maryland lawmaker is proposing. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the idea is to put the slots on the other side of security and have all those out of state passengers pay for maryland bills.

>> head to the airport. one delay or a canceled flight and fliers get stuck waiting with nothing to do. >> nothing. sit around, drink. >> just boring. >> there's a movement that that boredom could be broken with slots. the bill before the general assembly would allow 2,500 machines in the terminals beyond security, meaning only ticketed airline passengers can play. >> that way people can't drive to the airport to play. >> eric brown well's bill has been defeated the last 4 years. >> at a time when people are talking about a gas tax that's a good alternative. >> this bill has had opposition from some who say it would require more security. >> it would give people something to do. it would give more incentive for people to fly into baltimore instead of other airports. >> i think gambling is a form of entertainment to people. even though you are spending

money, it's a form of entertainment and people need things to do other than sitting around. >> reporter: slots would bring in over $13 million a year, money that should be used for bridges and roadways in maryland. i'm mike schuh reporting live. back to you. >> thank you . the committee is scheduled to begin testimony on that bill on march 3rd. some breaking news has just been handed to me. you're going to want to listen closely to this story. pope benedict the 16th is resigning. the pope is said to be resigning on the 28th of this month. we'll bring you more information as soon as it becomes available. again, according to cnn the pope is resigning, not retiring. back here in maryland, a former first lady is expected to appear at a forum for candidates seeking to replace former anne arundel county executive john leopold. kendall urlik will join a forum on thursday.

applications to become county executive must be submitted to the county council by this friday. at the staple centers in los angeles the music industry's biggest night of the year, there were some surprises and memorable performances at this year's grammy awards. >> the grammys lived up to its reputation for being unpredictable when mumford and sons took home album of the year. >> we figured we weren't going to win anything because the black keys have been sweeping up all day. >> dan orback of the black keys took home four awards. fun made a splash this year. they won two grammys including best new artist and song of the year. >> and the grammy goes to we are young. >> she said we and we were like could this be us. do you

good morning. we've been seeing a lot of fog starting to show up on traffic cameras. take a look at first warning doppler. now that this rain is really getting out of here in quick order we may -- fog may be a bit of an issue. i'm going to be watching the winds to see if they kick up a bit. it's going to be a high of 60 today. once this rain gets out, gray by mild. tomorrow back in the 40s. we are learn ing more about the breaking news, that pope benedict the 16th is resigning. he was elected in 2005 and will

resume on the 28th day. he said because of his advanced age and diminishing strength he did not feel that he could carry on with the job. he is the first pope to resign in nearly 600 years. this morning an asteroid is approaching the earth. as alex demetrick reports while it will come close it won't be close enough to hit. >> it's call 2012-d 14. it will only take up half a football field. what it lacks in size it makes up for in nearness. february 14th it will pass 17,000 miles from earth. >> that's close. >> doctor james garvin is the chief scientist. he said a 150 wide asteroid is a drop in the

cosmic bucket. >> it's small. >> the last time a similar size object hit was in 1908. it exploded on the way down with a force of a couple of bombs levelling 800 square miles of forest. >> that's a fairly small event relative to the history of what's happened to this planet. >> it's orbit was calculated and double checked. >> it's orbit is very well known. it cannot hit the earth. >> come ing ing as close as it does gives scientists a rare chance to study an asteroid. >> the possibility of understanding it as it comes close with the kind of telescopes here on earth is great. >> one that won't come with a bang. >> scientists say the asteroid which weighs about 130,000 tons has a slim chance of hitting satellite communications.

north avenue. speeds slower than usual on the west side of the beltway. 47 is your average now between 795 and 95 on the outer loop. 95 southbound slowing down between the beltway and the tunnel. there's a look at 95 just south of white marsh looking okay in that shot aside from the fog and rain. there's a look at 83 at shawan road, getting busier but not yet congested. we have major breaking news at this hour. actually in the last half hour. pope benedict the 16th is resigning from that post. in a meeting of cardinals the 85-year-old said that because of his advanced age and strength he did not feel he can carry on with the job. he said he will resign on february the 28th. he is the first to resign that office in nearly 600 years. $600 years. out in los angeles a $1

million reward is offered for christopher dorner, the ex-lapd officer . >> for the first time since the murders started in southern california a reward is being offered for the capture of christopher dorner. >> this group led by my office is posting a reward of $1 million for information that will lead to mr. dorner's capture. >> the former lapd officer murdered three people in revenge for being fired in 2008. dorner claims he was fired for reporting a fellow officer for excessive force. charlie back told kcbs he reopened the information and will -- investigation and will talk to him. in big

bear california police scaled back the search for him in the snow. the last clue they have is from thursday. the search has shifted to rely on information found into the investigation of dorner. >> help us to find dorner before he's able to kill again. >> dorner's victims are now being remembered. a moment of violence at the cal state women's basketball game because monica quan should have been on the bench as an assistant coach. >> she had a wonderful smile. >> police say dorner murdered quan and her fiance a week ago starting his revenge killings. >> quan is the daughter of a retired police captain who represented dorner in the disciplinary hearing that led to his firing. in chicago two people are in custody in connection with the murder of an honor student who sang with her school at the presidential inauguration.

she was shot and killed two weeks ago. the shooting happened at a park in chicago known for gang activity. police say she was not the intended target. investigators are questioning two persons of interest in that case. the family of the late joe paterno, the former head football coach at penn state university said the school rushed to judgement in the jerry sandusky case. they call its conclusions incorrect and speculative. paterno's family maintains he was not aware that sandusky had been sexually abusing young boys. paterno was fired after that report was released. he died from cancer last year. this morning a republican senator on capitol hill is pledging to hold up the confirmation of two of the president's appointees until he gets more answers about the terrorist attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. >> you're about to make news. you are saying that

you are going to block the nominations you're going to block them from coming to a vote until you get an answer to this. >> on cbs's face the nation sunday senator lindsay graham acknowledged he would use a rule that allows a senator to put a hold on presidential nominees. the south carolina republican hopes that by delaying the confirmations of chuck hagel and john brennan he can force the white house to answer questions about how much president obama knew about the attack in benghazi. >> i want to know what our president did. did he pick up the phone and call anybody? i think this is stuff the country needs to know. >> four americans including ambassador chris stevens were killed on the attack. republicans have accused the administration of misleading the public about the attack. >> the white house has been stone walling the congress. i'm going to do everything i can to get to the bottom of this and

hold this president accountable. >> graham's willingness to block the president's nominees has worked once already. last month he signalled he would take action to prevent the confirmations unless leon penetta testified about benghazi. they were all on capitol hill last week. democratic senator jack reed said graham is over reacting. >> these are critical offices the secretary of defense at a time when we're looking forward looking at crisis across the globe. to dwell on a drug and tragic -- on a tragic incident and block people is not right. >> democrats would have to muster 60 votes to proceed. >> graham's pledge comes as the president is getting ready to deliver his state of the union address, which you can see live tomorrow night at 9:00 on wjz

hear testimony on that bill on march the 5th. prices are making the biggest february jufrm in deck -- jump in decades at the pump. >> $4 a gallon is just around the corner. 2013 on track to be one of the most expensive years to fill up. gas prices in maryland up 16 cents in just one month, nationally up 17 cents. triple a says it's just the beginning. >> the way prices have been increasing we wouldn't be surprised to see prices approach near $4 a gallon in maryland. >> drivers aren't happy. sglesz when i went -- >> when i went to college it was 97 cents a gallon. >> did you imagine it would be $4? >> no. >> experts say there's not enough working refineries and growing demand for oil in china is a huge factor. >> it's a result of crude oil

>> please welcome jeremy and arma to the eyewitness news morning edition. good morning to both of you. >> wow. >> good morning . >> good morning. >> a lit tle applause never hurts. >> no, not a bit. thank you. >> i have to admit i was at the movies recently and saw the trailer for your movie for the first time. you had me ever since. hansel and gretel, most of know know the grim's fairy tale. it was a little grim besides the guy's name. the idea of the movie is fantastic. could you explain it? >> essentially it's taking what we're familiar with and even if you're not familiar with it, retell the fairy tale within the movie. i think most of us understand that they're left to the forest to die and a witch tries to eat them and they kill the witch, the end.

our movie doesn't start until 15 years later. that -- they are a little angry and seek revenge on the witches that try to harm children. it goes to different fairy tale lands. it's a lot of good fun. >> but if the fairy tale was scary, what you produced is even scarier? >> it seems scary. is it scary? >> yeah, i mean, there are some scary elements. i mean it's r rated. we could really crank it up a notch. it's gorry and there's an element that keeps it from being a horror. it's not -- you wouldn't take you kids to see it. >> as parents might when they hear hansel and gretel, which is a great idea puts witch hunters after it. >> yeah.

very, very clever. that's what got us excited to do the movie. >> was it fun to make? it looks like you had a lot of action to do. >> it was a blast from day one until the end. it was a big playground for adults. >> for us in movies like this usually it's mostly cgi so it's boring. 95% of this was all practical. all the sets were built, all the witches were in make up, the troll is a guy in a suit. it's all there for us, even the stunts. it's really, really fun being onset. >> even the little fairy tale village? >> yeah. >> we love that village. it's great. >> when people see the movie it's cool. it makes you feel

two people were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. a third person refused medical treatment. speaking of the airport there could be another way to pass the time while you're waiting for a flight. some lawmakers say slot machines inside the airport are the perfect solution to raise transportation funds. a bill before the general assembly would allow up to 25 machines on the other side of airport security inside the terminals. lawmakers are scheduled the hear testimony on the bill on march the 5th. this week former maryland first lady -- a former maryland first lady is expected to appear at a forum to replace john leopold. kendall urlik will join the forum on thursday. applications to become county executive must be submitted to the council by this friday. baltimore county fire investigators are trying to figure out what caused a house
